The materials that once defined a “good” build — heavy fibreglass, aluminium structures, stainless everywhere — now sit alongside options delivering better performance across almost every measure the industry cares about. Weight goes down. Strength goes up. Corrosion drops out of the equation. And finish quality reaches a level older materials couldn’t approach.
Advanced marine composites — what actually sits under the term
Advanced marine composites are those where reinforcement fibre is combined with resin systems designed to take certain load and environmental conditions. Whether using carbon, glass, Kevlar or any hybrid lay-ups they will fix different things; getting the mix wrong on a hull, deck, mast or interior will compromise the sailing performance over its working lifetime.

Corrosion resistance sits high on the material’s list of advantages. Salt water attacks steel and aluminium continuously. Composites don’t corrode, which extends the working life of structural components and reduces the maintenance burden on captains and yard managers. That reduction shows up most clearly on components living partly indoors and partly outdoors — the areas where traditional materials fail first.

Finish standards on visible components matter as much as the underlying structural work. Grain alignment across joined panels, weave consistency across curved surfaces, and clear-coat quality across the finished component all get scrutinised by owners, guests, and brokers.
